Sustainable Solutions: CO₂ reducing

TrendsIndustrial Solutions

When we use materials that have a low carbon footprint, we reduce the total emissions of the end-product.

Based on our recent State of Sustainability Report, only half of the industry is currently using CO₂-reducing materials, making it the sustainability priority with the lowest adoption rate at this time. But that's not the full picture.

Nearly 30% of those not using these materials today intend to add them to their repertoire within the next three years. This proves that carbon emissions are top of mind for everyone in the chemical industry. We know that to meet the many goals set around the world, there needs to be changes in the way things have always been done. That's why it's important that we offer chemicals created with a lower carbon footprint to reduce emissions from the start of chemistry.

Selecting low CO2 materials

No greenwashing

Eighty percent of the industry has concerns about greenwashing. That's why we carefully review and hand-select the chemicals we classify as sustainable. For a product to be classified in our low CO₂ category, it must first pass a screening to ensure we are promoting options that are not counter-intuitive to sustainability.

Aligning to industry standards

For chemicals to be classified as low-carbon, we require documentation that details the carbon footprint so that our customers can measure and include it in their sustainability targets. In the next years, we foresee more and more producers prioritising this to align with their carbon targets and provide more options to the end customers.

How the mass balance approach reduces carbon footprint

The mass balance approach is a method used across industries to incorporate renewable sources production processes. It has many benefits, including reducing CO2 emissions from the start of the value chain. That's why, we provide a range of chemical intermediates created with the biomass balance approach to reduce CO2 emissions from the start.

'State of Sustainability' Report: Reducing CO2 Edition

In 2023, IMCD Industrial Solutions conducted an extensive global survey to understand the sustainable priorities, motivations, and challenges in industrial sectors. One of the areas explored was how low-carbon materials are being used today.

Out of this, a first-of-its-kind report was developed on the 'State of Sustainability' in industrial sectors. Access your free copy of the Reducing CO2 Edition of the report today to uncover new industry data and insights on the use of these materials across different regions, industries, and companies.
